Road Connectivity To Bhogapuram Airport From Visakhapatnam City Issues Of Traffic Congestion, Pollution And Reach Short, Medium And Long Run Possibilities
The development of the new international airport at Bhogapuram, located about 50 km from Visakhapatnam city, is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity and support economic growth in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh. However, efficient transportation access between the city and the airport remains a critical challenge. This report examines the current road connectivity between Visakhapatnam and Bhogapuram Airport, focusing on issues such as traffic congestion, travel time, environmental pollution, and accessibility. The study highlights that improving connectivity is essential for ensuring the smooth functioning of the airport once it becomes operational. The study was conducted using field surveys and real-time traffic data from Google Maps to analyze traffic patterns along the major corridor from Visakhapatnam RTC Complex to Anandapuram Junction and further to Bhogapuram. Results indicate that congestion is particularly severe at key junctions such as Kommadi, Yendada, Boyapalem, and Anandapuram, where traffic delays significantly increase travel time. On average, it takes more than one hour to reach Anandapuram from the city center, while the remaining distance to the airport requires only about 20–25 minutes, showing that urban congestion is the primary bottleneck. The report also examines environmental conditions along the route and finds that pollution levels are relatively high at several traffic-heavy junctions due to vehicular emissions and construction activities. Air quality measurements reveal increased particulate matter levels, particularly near Anandapuram and the airport construction site. These findings emphasize the need for better traffic management, improved road infrastructure, and environmentally sustainable transport solutions to reduce congestion and pollution. To address these challenges, the study proposes several short-, medium-, and long-term solutions. Short-term measures include synchronizing traffic signals, improving traffic flow at Anandapuram, and introducing frequent airport shuttle buses. Medium-term solutions focus on widening roads and improving public transport connectivity, while long-term strategies include the development of an express highway along the coast, expansion of road lanes, and exploring alternative mobility options such as metro connectivity or sea routes. Implementing these measures will ensure faster, safer, and more sustainable access to Bhogapuram International Airport in the future.
